Padubidri, Feb 6, 2012: H. D. Kumaraswamy, the former chief minister of Karnataka and the president of the state-level JD (S), declared that the BJP-led state government has done nothing but publicize itself during its three years in power. He further alleged that the BJP’s only achievements are inflicting injustice on minorities, poor people, and farmers.
The JD (S) leader was delivering his inaugural address after declaring open the Jatyateeta Sanghatana Jatha Grama Yatre, an initiative toward uniting secular forces through village visits, at Buntara Bhavana in Padubidri on Feb 5 Sunday. The event was organized by the district JD (S).
Stating that the BJP’s only aim is to collect votes by creating a rift between Muslims and Hindus, he said that the recent incident in Uppinangady was a BJP strategy. He also attacked the Congress, which maintained silence on the Sindhagi flag hoisting issue although it calls itself a pro-minority party.
Criticizing the BJP government’s agricultural budget, he said that farmers have continued committing suicide in spite of this budget.
Further, Kumaraswamy said that the party will agitate against the Udupi Power Corporation Limited’s (UPCL) thermal power plant at Nandikur, adding that a proper protest plan will be drawn up after the party visits affected places and studies the problems. Stating that he is aware that the UPCL came into existence when he was the CM, he said that it is his duty to deal with the problems it has created. He spoke thus in reaction to a petition presented to him by Raitha Sangha leaders about the problems created by the power plant for the local people.
Kumaraswamy welcomed several student leaders, women, and politicians who had recently joined the JD (S). He also released a handbook on the Jatyateeta Sanghatana Jatha Grama Yatre and presented a sewing machine to a Muslim woman. Kumaraswamy also unveiled a tableau, which will used during the tour of rural areas over the next two months.
Pooja Gandhi, the Sandalwood actress, addressed the gathering and said that she joined JD (S) because she was impressed by the people friendly schemes launched by the JD (S) when it was in power. She said that she would visit rural areas and serve the people. She also urged women to join the JD (S) in large numbers and predicted that the state will become a role model for the rest of the country if the JD (S) comes to power.
Delivering the keynote address, Mahendra Kumar, the JD (S) youth leader, flayed the Sangh Parivar for sacrificing honesty for political power. Accusing the RSS of insulting minorities and suspecting the sincerity of minorities, he said that India cannot be constructed as a nation by neglecting Muslims.
