Mangalore, May 4: Comrade V. A. N. Namboodri, the president of the BSNL Employees’ Union in Delhi, inaugurated a seminar on the present condition of BSNL employees organized by the BSNL Employees’ Union at Town Hall on May 4, Wednesday.
In his inaugural address, he said that the BSRPE recommendations are yet to be implemented, explaining that the company has 2,87,749 employees aged between 48 and 62 years as against the 3,97,000 employees at the time of its creation. Changes in technology and the customers’ preference to mobile phones over landline phones have largely eliminated the need for man power. The skills of a number of employees have now become outdated, he added.
Speaking further on the situation, he said that 53 percent of the workers are under the age group of 50 and 60 while 39 percent are in the age group of 35 and 49. The income of operation has fallen by 22.76 percent and the cost of manpower has increased by 81.31 percent during the last five years, he added.
Comrade C. K. Gundanna, the circle secretary, delivered the keynote address and said that all programmes launched in DK must be implemented with responsibility. Speaking about the importance of BSNL, he said BSNL offers telephone services throughout the country, adding that BSNL is popular for its excellent customer care service. Stating that BSNL landline services are appreciated by customers more than services provided by mobile phone companies, he said that financial crisis has hit the company in a big way, making employees wonder if they will get their next salaries.
Comrade P. Surendran, the district president of BSNLEU, DK Telecom District, presided over the event.
The chief guests were Y. C. Mishra, the principal general manager of BSNL DK Telecom District; K.M. Shetty, the additional general manager of BSNL DK Telecom District; Manjunath Holla, the deputy GM Finance of DK TD Mangalore; Comrade B. Salakki, the assistant general secretary of BSNLEU New Delhi; Comrade B. P. Narayana, the circle president of BSNLEU Karnataka Circle; and Comrade P. Mukundan, the circle organizing secretary of BSNLEU Karnataka.
