The strike call was given by the All India Bank Employees’ Association, All India Bank Officers’ Association, Bank Employees’ Federation of India and National Union of Bank Employees.

The strike follows the Lok Sabha clearing Banking Laws (Amendment) Bill after the government dropped controversial provisions relating to allowing banks to trade in futures.

Several bank employees staged a demonstration in front of the Canara Bank Circle office at Balmatta and opposed what they termed the anti- employee policies of the government. They also opposed the proposed banking reforms by amending the Banking Regulation Act.

Addressing the agitators, Com. PR Karanth, Joint Secretary of All India Bank Employees Association and President of DK unit of the Association, spoke on the various demands of the Association and how the proposed reforms would affect the bank employees and also how it was against the interest of the people of the nation.

The speakers at the protest also strongly opposed the government plans to merge banks and also increase in voting rights of shareholders from 10 per cent to 26 per cent in private sector banks and to 10 per cent from the existing one per cent in public sector banks.
