Bantwal, Feb 9, 2014: Dr B Rameshananda Somayaji, Administrative Officer of the Somayaji Hospital has clarified that medical negligence was not responsible for the death of Chanchalakshi, wife of Naveen, a resident of BC Road, who was admitted to the hospital for her second delivery.
Addressing a press meet held at BC Road on February 8, Saturday, he said Chanchalakshi who was under the treatment of Dr Bharathi Shetty was admitted to the hospital for delivery on February 6, Thursday. He said the woman who was quite normal until evening, all of a sudden began to vomit and shiver at around 6.45 pm. Even her blood pressure levels dropped. No sooner gynaecologist Dr Bharathi Shetty and anesthetist Dr Shashikala Somayaji arrived and began treatment, she developed breathing problems, Dr Rameshananda Somayaji said adding though steps were taken to shift her to a private hospital in Mangalore under the supervision of doctors, her life could not be saved. He also clarified that neither Dr Bharathi Shetty nor the nurses have given any injection to Chanchalakshi except Pitonsin drips given to induce labour pain.
He further said that the family members of Chanchalakshi can question the cause of her death at a suitable platform instead of resorting to protest. He said decision on the issue would be taken after talks with IMA office bearers and clarified that there were no plans to offer compensation to the affected family.
To another question, he said as a police complaint has been lodged, efforts would be made to solve the impasse through legal ways.
At the same time the officer also fumbled in replying to some queries while he evaded reply to a few more and ended the press meet in a haste.
