Emphasizing the virtues of humanity and a good attitude, Dr. Shetty said compassion, determination, perseverance and the ability to cope with changes were hallmarks of a great doctor. He advised the students who intended to pursue surgery, not to be fear of failure but to have confidence and courage.
Dr. Shetty urged the medical practitioners to use their skills to serve the less privileged and poor patients. Taking example of manual scavengers, he said there are over 9000 manual scavengers in Bangalore city. The number may be less in Mangalore. They dive into sewages and clean them up so that the rich people and others will not to bother. Their life expectancy is less than 45 years. They die of various diseases and their families suffer. We will become a great nation only when we feel responsible for the fellowmen’s concern.
