Coast Guard rescue 7 fishermen from burning boat off Karwar coast

Karwar, Oct 06, 2016 :  Indian Coast Guard Ship (ICGS) Rajdoot operating under the operational and administrative control of Coast Guard Karnataka, coordinated a rescue operation of 07 fishermen from a burning fishing boat Akash (Regd at Malpe),  45 KM from Karwar  on October, 05.

 

Fishermen on board FB Akash informed ICGS Rajdoot and other boats in vicinity that they are under imminent danger due to major fire on their boat and required immediate rescue. Further, the same information was shared with Coast Guard Karnataka.

On receipt of the distress message, Maritime Rescue Sub Centre (MRSC) New Mangalore functioning under the aegis of Coast Guard Karnataka swung into action and directed ICGS Rajdoot, patrolling in the area, to rush for assistance. Meanwhile, all the 07 fishermen were picked up by Fishing Boat Sitali, which was operating in the vicinity.

The Coast Guard ship moved at its maximum speed and reached the site . The fishing boat was observed to be under major fire and excessive smoke was emanating. The rescued fishermen reported that there was 2000 Ltrs diesel and LPG cylinders onboard. Taking all the precautions, ICGS Rajdoot started fighting the fire.

Thereafter, ICGS Rajdoot embarked the rescued fishermen and proceeded towards Malpe for handing over to Coastal Security Police. All the 07 fishermen were handed over to CSP  today,off Malpe.

A Coast Guard Dornier Aircraft was also tasked today, for ascertaining the status of the burnt boat. The boat has reportedly not sunk. The mariners and fishing boats operating in the area have been cautioned for maintaining safe distance while transiting through the area.

The prompt and coordinated response by Coast Guard units as well as Fishing Boat Sitali, which was operating in the vicinity and timely raising of alarm by the distressed fishermen, was well appreciated by the Commander Coast Guard Karnataka, Deputy Inspector General KR Suresh, TM. The Commander also stated that the fishermen should carry adequate lifesaving and fire fighting equipment onboard so that they can avoid major eventuality. Coast Guard ships and crafts are always alert for the safety and security of the coast and the people of Karnataka.
