Mangaluru, May 21, 2016: It is reported that a special meeting in Mangaluru, of Karnataka Rajya Raitha Sangha and Hasiru Sene resolved to submit a memorandum to the Union and the state governments seeking compensation for the loss of areca, coconut, pepper, cocoa and other horticultural crops in view of drought.
Ravikiran Punacha, who chaired the meeting, said more than 50% of the total horticulture and agriculture produce is lost due to drought. The meeting resolved that government should declare the five taluks of the DK district as drought-hit and should provide Rs 75,000 compensation per hectare. The farmers’ leaders urged the government to sanction programmes for permanent irrigation and ground water development in the district. It was also decided to initiate registration process of 12 coconut growers’ federations and start the operations of eight federations.
