Mangalore, July 25, 2013: SV Amin, Convener, Propaganda Committee of Karnataka Pradesh Congress Committee, has in a letter to Oscar Fernandes, Union Minister for Surface Transport and Highways has requested him to take steps to concretize the entire stretch of road from Mangalore to Sakleshpur including the Shiradi Ghat stretch.
The Congress leader has suggested laying of concrete road for the stretch considering the fact that the road does not sustain with normal maintenance. He has also suggested that the Ghat stretch may be straightened up through a tunnel using Japanese technology after getting environment clearance.
Amin in his letter has also recommended development of Sakleshpura - Bisle Ghat - Subrahmanya Road as an alternate route to Shiradi Ghat road.
The letter has also suggested a Express Corridor route from Kumta to Bidar via Sirsi, Hanagal - Shigganvi - Gadag -Gajendragad -Ilkal - Lingsugur - Shorapur – Jewargi and Gulbarga and be named "West -North East Express Corridor" or"Mangalore –Bidar Express Corridor" Road to plug the connectivity problem between coastal districts and central and east Karnataka.
He has also recommended setting up of South(Bangalore) - North(Bidar) Express Corridor Road from Bangalore to Hiriyur on existing NH-4. Considering the fact that the tar/metal roads do not withstand heavy rains of coastal and Malnad region and become unmotorable within a short span, Amin suggested that all roads be converted into concrete roads.
He has further requested the government to consider rebuilding of NH-48 Mangalore to Sakleshpur stretch , NH-17 stretch in coastal area, NH-63 between Ankola and Hubli and NH-13 from Mangalore to Shimoga stretch with concrete.
