Customs officials at Mangalore Airport seize gold worth Rs 30 lacs; one person arrested.

Mangalore, Mar 10, 2014: The customs officials at the Mangalore International Airport have again thwarted attempt of smuggling of gold and seized four gold pieces, totally weighing 1000.130 grams,  valued at Rs.30,60,398/- today, March 10, 2014


The gold was concealed in an Air compressor. The passenger named Muhammad Kunhi Cheeri Kundu aged about 39 years, who is a resident of Cheeri Kundu House, Cheruvathur, PO Kaidakkad, Kasaragod district, Kerala was taken into custody in connection with the gold smuggling.  He had arrived at Mangalore International Airport on 10.03.2014 by Jet Airways fight 9W531 from Dubai at 05.30 hrs.

Operations were conducted under the supervision of Shri. Krishna Kumar Prasad, Assistant Commissioner of Customs, Mangalore International Airport and were lead by Shri.B.Prabhakara Poojary, Superintendent along with Superintendents Lionel Fernandes, Sendhil Murugan, B.A.Kariappa, H.G.Yogesh and Inspectors Shri.G.Kumaraswamy, and Virender Kumar and Hawaldar K.S. Ravindra.

Further the Commissioner of Customs, Mangalore, Shri.D.Purushotham expressed his deep concern regarding the increasing trends in smuggling and directed the officers to intensify the vigilance and surveillance and crack the attempts made by the unscrupulous elements who are indulging in these activities.

The said passenger was arrested and produced before the Magistrate. Further investigation is under progress.
