Mangalore, May 1: Save Our Beach 2011, a drive to clean beaches as part of the Clean Green Progressive City campaign organized by the district administration, was inaugurated at Thota Bengre on May 1, Sunday.
In his address, District-in-charge Minister Krishna J. Palemar urged citizens to fight against pollution, adding that the drive to clean beaches will be more effective since it is a group effort. He also informed that a circular will be issued across Karnataka banning the use of plastic bouquets at government functions.
Speaking about the clean beach drive, DC Subhodh Yadav said that a 43km beach stretch will be cleaned simultaneously.
The chief guests were B. N. Pinto, Nagmohan Das, and Abdul Nazeer. Police Commissioner Seemanth Kumar Singh, Deputy Speaker Yogish Bhat, Assistant Commissioner Prabhulinga Kavalkatti, DK Kannada Sahitya Parishad President Pradeep Kumar Kalkura, and others were also present.
A number of college students, most of them girls, participated in the drive; and a street play presented by A. B. Shetty College focuses on steps that can be taken to keep beaches clean all over the world. A number of local people also participated.
