Mangalore, November 1: The death centenary of Rev Fr Augustus Muller SJ, the founder of Father Muller Charitable Institution, was observed at the Academy Hall of FMCI on Monday, November 1.

Chief guest Seemanth Kumar Singh, City Police Commissioner said that ‘Surely Fr. Muller drew his strength from his compassion for the poor.  As the hospital grew slowly, more and more qualified people came to help him. As a homeopathy doctor Fr Muller did not combine professionalism with materialism or commercialisation.


After the launch of Father Mullers chaitable institution, the institution has concentrated in providing quality education with high technology, he said.


On the occasion, the newly built hi-tech laundry at Father Mullers was inaugurated and the foundation stone laying ceremony of the new building for Father Muller College of Nursing was held.. Rev Dr Aloysius Paul D’Souza, Bishop of Mangalore Diocese and Chairman of FMCI presided over the function.


Administrator Richard Coelho, Vincent D’Souza, Denis D’Sa, Jacinta D’Souza and others were present.


History

Fr Augustus Muller, a Jesuit Missionary, was born in Westphalia in Germany on 13th March 1841. He arrived in Mangalore in the year 1878 and started dispensing homoeopathic medicines to students and other patients, initially under a banyan tree on Kankanady hills. Fr Muller Charitable Institutions began in the year 1880. Subsequently, he set up a General Hospital in 1895. A Plague Hospital was set up when the deadly epidemic – Bubonic Plague – hit Mangalore in 1902. When disaster struck again in 1907 in the form of Cholera, Fr Muller converted his hospital into a cholera camp to provide comfort to the afflicted. Fr Augustus Muller was presented with Kaiser-I-Hind award in 1907 by the Governor of Madras in recognition of his heroic work and selfless service to the poor and downtrodden of Mangalore.
