Do not hesitate to complain against sexual harassment in buses, RTO Mallikarjun tells youngsters

Mangalore Dec 22, 2012 : Regional Transport Officer Mallikarjuna has urged youngsters to report to the Regional Transport Authority in the event of they being sexually harassed in buses.
Speaking on Road Safety at a function held under the aegis of the Kanara Chamber of Commerce and Industry in Mangalore on December 21, Friday, the RTO, while referring to the Delhi gang rape said instances of sexual harassment are not limited merely to large cities like Delhi, but there might be cases when people might have misbehaved with women in buses in Mangalore too.
He urged youngsters to be bold enough and report the matter to the RTO and also note down the vehicle number if possible. Anyone found guilty will face action, he added. In the event that the bus crew was found at fault, then licence would be cancelled, he said.
The RTO said Kankanady Junction would soon have a pre-paid autorickshaw counter and added the centre would start functioning in January. This, he said would be the third such centre.
On complaints that the height of the footboard in buses proved inconvenience to passengers while boarding and alighting, he said there were plans to have doors in the middle of the buses rather than in the rear and front.
Commenting on increasing violation of traffic rules including no-parking rules, he urged people to abide by the traffic rules and regulations and be co-operative with the traffic police.
