Down pours in DK cause serious disasters

Mangaluru, June 30, 2016: Heavy down pours have made flooded roads across Mangaluru city. K S Rao Road in front of City Centre Mall, Bunder area, Hampankatta, Pumpwell among others were water-logged. Pedestrians and vehicle users had a tough time wading through the rain-clogged roads in Mangaluru.

In the last 24 hours, Belthangady experienced highest rainfall of 125 mm followed by Sullia— 122.5 mm, Puttur— 117.5 mm and Bantwal— 103.5 mm. The water-level in river Nethravathi has increased to 6.2 metre in Bantwal. The water-level in Kumaradhara was 20 metre in Uppinangady.

Due to heavy rainfall in Subrahmanya, the schools and colleges have declared holiday today Wednesday June 30. The snanaghatta (bathing ghat) in Kukke Subrahmanya has been submerged. The low-lying areas in and around Subrahmanya have also been inundated. The flood water has entered the arecanut plantations and paddy fields in the region.

Two houses were damaged in Puttur taluk. The roof of a house collapsed due to heavy rain in Paduvannor.
A huge tree is uprooted and fell on electric line at Devadaru on Mani-Mysuru state highway. The electric poles in Ishwaramangala, Pernaje were also damaged. As a result, the power supply was disrupted. The compound wall of a house Puttur.

Kasargod : Reports indicate rivers in Kasargod including Chandragiri and Tejaswini are in full spate. The low-lying areas have been flooded and sea erosion has intensified at Koippadi in Kumble. The one-km long sea wall has collapsed. Five persons suffered injuries when a house. Several were injured.

Rainfall figures : The average is 101mm more than what the district had received last year.  The cumulative rainfall till June 29 was 877mm, which is 125mm more than what the district received during the same period last year. While Belthangady taluk received highest amount of rainfall at 125mm, it was closely followed by Sullia at 122mm. Mangaluru taluk received 72mm of rain and Puttur received good rainfall at 117 mm. Bantwal taluk received 103mm of rainfall.

Mangaluru, Bantwal and Sullia taluks have surpassed the cumulative rainfall of June for last year. While Mangaluru taluk received almost double rainfall at 1058 mm (last year 589 mm), Bantwal received 875 mm (last year 704mm) and Sullia has received 774 mm, 36mm more rainfall than last year. Rest of the taluks have received less rainfall this year compared to previous year.
