New Delhi, Dec 05, 2022: “Drug Trafficking and the Intriguing Tentacles of Narco-Terrorism”, a book by Dr.G. Shreekumar Menon retired IRS officer and former Director General of the National Academy of Customs, Indirect Taxes & Narcotics, was released at New Delhi on Saturday, 3rd December 2022.
The book was released by former Member of Parliament, Rajya Sabha and present Chairman of IDSA, Mr. Tarun Vijay. Speaking on the occasion he cautioned that the growing narcotics threat has deep implications for the security of the Sub-Continent. The finances generated from the trade is financing various terror groups, endangering the lives of many citizens, and financing agitations having disruption of national unity as its goal.
Mr. Sudanshu Pandey, retired IAS and present election Commissioner for Union Territories, cautioned about the drug problem affecting the youth of the country. He also observed that the detection of drug-trafficking has become one of their major responsibilities.
Mr. N. Venkatraman Additional Solicitor General of India, pointed out that implementation of the provisions of the NDPS Act, has become very challenging.The Punjab and Haryana High Court recently directed the States of Punjab, Haryana and the Union Territory of Chandigarh to initiate criminal proceedings against consumers of “narcotic drugs and psychotropic substances” to eradicate the menace in the case of “Surmukh Singh versus State of Punjab”. He also pointed out that Substance misuse is associated with a wide range of health and social problems, including heart disease, stroke, high blood pressure, various cancers (e.g., breast cancer), mental disorders, neonatal abstinence syndrome (NAS), driving under the influence (DUI) and other transportation-related injuries, sexual assault and rape, unintended pregnancy, sexually transmitted infections, intentional and unintentional injuries, and property crimes.
Mr. Vinit Goenka, BJP Spokesperson and Chairperson in many Security Groups, pointed out the security dimensions on the maritime borders and the huge seizures affected during recent times. He specifically referred to the Mundra port Heroin seizure which is the world’s largest seizure.
Dr. G. Shreekumar Menon, the author in his address touched upon the significance of the Opium Wars and its continuing relevance in the present era. He also lamented that India’s history books pay scant attention to the role of Indian soldiers and the various Army Regiments like Madras Rifles, Ludhiana Rifles, and Bengal Rifles had played in the Opium Wars. Great Britain’s victory over China, was crafted by the Indian soldiers.
