Mangalore, September 8, 2010: The Lokayuta police nabbed a government official for accepting a bribe from a person who had applied for a job at MRPL.
The Lokayukta police team under the leadership of Deputy Superintendent of Lokayukta Sadananda Vernekar and Lokayukta Inspector Udyanayak arrested S. D. Basavaraj, an employment officer at Human Resource Development Centre (HRDC) in Mangalore City Corporation (MCC), following a complaint lodged by Balaram of Suratkal.
In his complaint, Balaram had alleged that the official was demanded a bribe of Rs. 6,000 for sending his application to MRPL, which had invited applications for posts through the HRDC.
He had submitted his application at HRDC on Aug 14. The last date to submit applications was Aug 16. The employment officer, however, registered his application only on September 1 and later demanded an OBC certificate to forward it to MRPL. When Balaram produced the OBC certificate on September 6, the officer demanded a bribe of Rs. 6,000. When Balaram protested, he said that he will reduce the amount to Rs. 5,000.
Balaram told the reporters of Mangaloretoday that he related the story to District President of DYFI Muneer Katipalla who took him to the Lokayukta office, where he officially lodged a complaint. The Lokayukta gave him a voice recorder and Rs. 1000 and asked him to record a conversation with the corrupt official demanding bribe. On September 7, Tuesday, Balaram approached the official, paid him Rs. 1000, and recorded the conversation in which the official instructed him to bring the rest of the money the following day.
Inspector Udaya Nayak said that they gave Rs. 4000 to Balaram and asked him to give it to the official. The Lokayukta team raided Basavaraj’s office as soon as Balaram bribed him and produced the culprit in court.
