Mangalore, Jan 6: The department of district health and family welfare has launched the initiative of conducting a Mass Administration Programme 2011, as part of the national filarial control programme.
Speaking at a press conference held in his office on Jan 6, Thursday, Dr. O. R. Srirangappa, the district health and family welfare officer, said that the purpose of the programme is to provide filarial control tablets on Jan 10, Monday within the city, rural areas, Puttur, and Bantwal.
Revealing further details, he said that the programme will be implemented in 52 health centres within taluk limits and Mangalore City Corporation (MCC) limits. He also said that the administration intends to cover 6 cities, 234 villages, 34,1971 houses, and 1,49,276 people. Around 865 medicine distribution centres, 5,742 distributors, and 574 supervisors will be employed for the successful implementation of the programme.
He also said that 17 micro filarial cases and 35 hydrocele cases have been reported from Jan 2010 and 13 new cases of filaria have been identified. He also said that 1348 cases have been treated from 1991, adding that the disease is identified 10 – 12 years after infection.
Dr. Arun Kumar, the district malaria officer, said that there are four permanent centres in Ullal, Katipalla, Amalmogaru, and Bokkapatna to conduct blood tests and that temporary centres are set up in Bengre, Suratkal, Kanyana, Bantwal, Navoor, and Kurnad annually.
He also said that the most affected parts of Mangalore are Mannagudda, Suratkal, and Ullala, adding that no cases have been reported from Belthangady and Sullia, owing to which no programme will be held in these areas.
