New Delhi, Jan 23, 2023: The Supreme Court on Monday listed the hijab ban case for an urgent hearing and said that the court will constitute the three-judge bench for the case. The development comes after a batch of petitions challenged the Karnataka High Court judgment for refusing to lift the ban on hijab in educational institutions of the state.
Senior advocate Meenakshi Arora mentioned an interim application seeking permission for the girls who have not been able to attend classes to sit for exams.
Meenakshi mentioned the case of girls who had lost one year because of the restrictions on wearing a headscarf. She said that the practical exams are starting on February 6.
“Many girls had to drop out. The practical exams will start on February 16. I need some directions urgently so one more year is not lost,” said the senior advocate.
Hearing this, the CJI said that the court would examine it and list it for urgent hearing.
“I will constitute the three-judge bench for the case,” said the CJI.
A two-judge bench of the Supreme Court delivered a split judgment in October 2022, while hearing petitions challenging the Karnataka High Court order which refused to overturn a ban on hijabs in educational institutions in the state.
