Mangaluru/ Udupi, April 11, 2025: The weathermen have predicted the coastal districts to witness light rain or thunderstorm with gusty winds during the next few days even as many houses and horticulture crops were damaged when heavy rain accompanied by gusty winds lashed Dakshina Kannada and Udupi districts on Wednesday, April 9.
Karkala taluk in Udupi district that received average rainfall of 9 mm during 24 hours between 8 a.m. of April 9 and 8 a.m. of April 10 bore the brunt of the rain with 11 each instances of damage to houses and horticulture fields. The damage was extensive in Hirgna, Renjala, Nallur and Sanoor villages of the taluk according to the district administration. The total loss was about ₹10 lakh, the administration said.
Udup district received an average of 5 mm rainfall during the period with Byndoor taluk receiving 6 mm, Kundapura taluk 5.5 mm, Kapu taluk 2.9 mm Hebri taluk 2.4 mm, Brahmavara taluk 1.3 mm and Udupi taluk received 0.9 mm rainfall.
In Dakshina Kannada district, roof sheets of the house of one Parvathi were blown away causing damage of about ₹20,000 to the owner in Nekkilady village of Puttur taluk. The district received an average rainfall of 12 mm that was spread across the region.
Forecast
The India Meteorological Department has predicted occurrence of light rain or thunderstorm with gusty winds up to 30-40 kmph in the three coastal districts of Uttara Kannada, Udupi and Dakshina Kannada for the next two days while the rest of the State could witness light rain with gusty winds with speeds up to 50 kmph during the period.
From April 13 till April 16, coastal Karnataka as well as other regions were likely to witness light rain at a few places, IMD said.
