Kambala with restrictions allowed by Karnataka HC

Puttur, March 4, 2016:  Pranidaya Sangha had filed a  PIL - Public Interest Litigation in the Karnataka High Court urging a ban on the Kambala, KS Ashok Kumar Rai, a businessman and president of Uppinangady Vijaya- Vikrama Jodukere Kambala Committee filed a writ petition challenging the PIL. However, in an interim judgment, the High Court has permitted conducting Kambala on the condition that there would not be any kind of cruelty against the animals involved.

The Dakshina Kannada District administration had instructed the organisers not to conduct Kambala after the PIL was filed by Pranidaya Sangha. Rai filed the writ petition in the High Court on February 29.

Chief Justice of the High Court took up the writ for inquiry on March 1 and passed an order, permitting Kambala with certain restrictions.

It was argued that Kambala was an ancient folk art of Tulu Nadu and there was no scope for cruelty to animals and that it was a cultural and traditional sport of farmers.
