Kanaka Jayanthi observed at Town Hall in city

Mangalore, Nov 14, 2011: District-in-charge Minister Krishna J. Palemar inaugurated the Kanaka Jayanthi, which was organized at Town Hall on Nov 14 Monday by the Department of Kannada and Culture. 

In his inaugural address, the minister said that the state government has released Rs. 50,000, to each district and Rs. 20,000 is given to each taluk for the celebration of Kanaka Utsava in a bid to popularize his works among the public. Stating that this will ensure the retention of Kanaka Dasa as the state’s role model, he said that the government has spent Rs. 10 crore on the construction of the Anubhava Mantapa in Kaginele.

 

 

 

Delivering the introductory address, Additional Deputy Commissioner Dayanand said that although Kanaka Dasa belonged to the warrior community, he devoted himself to the path of devotion. He said that the body of literature created by Kanaka Dasa is huge. 

Delivering a talk on Kanaka Dasa, Kateel First Grade College Principal Balakrishna Shetty said that Kanaka Dasa’s literature is based on daily activities of the common man. Speaking about the Ramadhanyacharite, which illustrates the conflict between various social classes through a conversation between a grain of rice and a grain of ragi, he said that this is the most creative literary piece in Kannada, bearing a strong social message. 

Stating that Kanaka Dasa was aggressive and straightforward in his criticism of social evils, he cited the example of “Kula Kula Kula Vendu Hodedhadadiri” as one of the greatest poems advocating social equality. 

MLA U. T. Khader, MCC Commissioner Harish Kumar, Shivarame Gowda, Mangala Naik of the department of Kannada and Culture, K. M. Raju, Kuruba Community President Hanumanthappa, and many others participated in the event.
