Konkan Koghul laid to rest in Jeppu Cemetery

Mangalore, March 11: Huge crowds of fans, friends, family members, relatives, parishioners, well-wishers, and others who knew and admired legendary Konkani singer Mr. Wilfy Rebimbus flocked to St Joseph’s Seminary to pay their final respects to him between 2 p.m. and 4 p.m. on March 11, Thursday. Widely accalimed as the Konkan Koghul, Mr. Rebimbus had earned a position of great esteem in the world of music in general and Konkani music in particular. 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

The Mangalore police provided security along the roads leading to the venue, the venue itsels and the surrounding areas. Nearly 5,000 people attended the funeral service of Mr. Wilfy Rebimbus. The United Youngsters had made the perfect arrangements. Mr. Leslie Rego was the comperer. 

Mr. Wilfy Rebimbus has a soft corner for St Joseph’s Seminary and Jeppu Church. He had spend spent most of his life of 67 years in these surroundings. He founded the “United Youngsters” in the Jeppu Compound and most of his earliest friendships were formed here. Therefore, it was decided that his mortal remains would be laid to rest at the Jeppu Cemetery. 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

The funeral mass commenced at 4 p.m. The altar was arranged in an orderly fashion on the grounds of the 130-year-old St Joseph’s Church. Seventy-three priests concelebrated the funeral mass of Mr. Wilfy Rebimbus. The homily was rendered by Fr Victor Machado, who knew Wilfy ever since he was a young man. Bishop of Shimoga Rev Fr Gerald Lobo graced the occasion with his presence.

Wilfy’s closest friends, who belong to United Youngsters, participated in the choir. Melwyn Peres, Claud, Prem, and Babita sang Wilfy’s own compositions during the choir, lending witness to his eventful, beautiful, and fruitful life. 

The eulogies were given by Fr Andrew D’Souza, Dr. Edward Nazareth, Bishop Aloysius D’Souza, and Fr. Denis D’Sa. They spoke of Wilfy’s wonderful humane nature, his charitable gestures, and his pious life. His life, they said, was a celebration and a song. The best gift that the people of Mangalore can give to Wilfy is to continue his legacy and make his dreams come true, they said. 

Mr. Wilfy Rebimbus’s hearse was taken to the cemetery at 6 p.m. where he was laid to rest in the tearful presence of his wife Meena, son Vishwas, daughter-in-law Charleen, daughter Veena, son-in-law Arthur, and his grandchildren.
