Hajabba (50) has to his credit a number of awards including the Kannada Prabha Person of the Year Award for 2004 and the CNN-IBN Real Heroes Award of 2009. His biography has also been written by Ismath Pajeer and published by Kanthavara Kannada Sangha.
Hajabba, who started life as a seller of oranges, decided to start a primary school in the local madrasa because he wanted to do something for the local Muslim community. He built the school with his own hard-earned money, and in spite of his poverty, he has donated all his prize money to the cause of education.
