Mangalore, Apr 23: The Mangalore City Corporation (MCC) has bagged the Green Leaf Award 2011 for adopting scientific ways to manage sanitary landfills. An advisory committee of Clean India 2011 judged all the nominations submitted for this award.
Green Leaf Awards are conferred on organizations and individuals who contribute to solid waste management and demonstrate practical actions and solutions. Every year, Sukuki Exnora invites nominations for this award; and this year, MCC bagged it for managing the landfill site in the city.
Ram Lakshmi, the director general of the AP Forest Academy in Hyderabad, and Amala Akkineni, the environmental activist, presented the award, which comprised a citation and a shield at a glittering awards ceremony held at the Centre for Economic Studies in Hyderabad.
Praveen Anchan, the mayor of Mangalore; Yashwanth Meenakaliya, the chairman of the health standing committee; Manjaiah, the heath officer; and Manjunath Shetty, the environment engineer, also participated in the event.
