Mangaluru, July 30, 2018: The MCC Council meeting held here on July 30, Monday witnessed heated debate among members when opposition corporators complained that those seeking door numbers after completion of house construction were harassed.
Raising the issue, BJP Corporator Sudhir Shetty alleged that those who have raised unauthorised constructions get several amenities while the common people were subject to hardships. Several BJP corporators backed him on the issue.
MCC Commissioner Mohammad Nazeer in his reply said some were violating rules and raising constructions or houses on the grounds that they can avail essential connections under 112 C despite not having licences. As many as 7,444 buildings have thus secured door numbers paying double the taxes, this is a serious issue as the rule is being misused. The issuing of permission under 112 C for unauthorised constructions has been withheld temporarily, he said.
When opposition members demanded that concession must be shown to those whose houses are within 1000 square feet, Mayor Bhasker K assured that door numbers would be given after site inspection.
Former mayor Kavitha Sanil drew the attention of the meeting towards the fact that the authorities have not initiated eviction despite court orders to clear encroachments of parking spaces in respect of 58 buildings.
Officials told the meeting there were some technical problems. The Mayor instructed officials not to succumb to pressure and also asked the corporators not to oppose eviction.
