Thirty percent of the dump yard burned steadily for around 5 hours, and people could smell the smoke up to a distance of 5 kms. The fire department began its fire-fighting activity almost immediately, irrespective of which they were unable to control the fire.

Local residents said that the fire broke out around 11 a.m., and rapidly spread all over the yard. They said that the smoke was so thick that they could hardly see anything inside their houses. Although fires normally break out in the dump yard, residents have never before witnessed a fire of this magnitude. People who live close to the dump yard are constantly worried about their health and well being. They said that they had to rush out of their houses to avoid getting suffocated with the smoke and the smell of burning waste.

Reliable sources from MCC said that frequent fires break out in the dump yard because chemicals and medical wastes are illegally dumped into the yard at night. The sources alleged that this happens with the knowledge and consent of some MCC employees.
