MLA Bharath Shetty booked for hate speech

Mangaluru, July 10, 2024: The Mangaluru city police have filed a case against Mangaluru City North MLA Y. Bharath Shetty for allegedly making a hate speech against Rahul Gandhi, the Leader of the Opposition in the Lok Sabha.

The case was registered following a complaint by Mangaluru City Corporation councillor Anil Kumar. Dr. Shetty is charged with an offense punishable under Section 353(2) (statements conducive to public mischief) of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita.

During a protest organized by the BJP in Kavoor, Mangaluru, a few days ago, Dr. Shetty reportedly stated that Mr. Gandhi should be slapped for making a statement against Hindus in the Lok Sabha. Congress leaders, including former Minister B. Ramanath Rai and MLC Ivan D’Souza, have criticized Dr. Shetty for his provocative remarks against Mr. Gandhi.
