Puttur, May 2: D. V. Sadananda Gowda, the MP of Udupi – Chikkamagalur, conferred the Karnataka Tulu Sahitya Academy Annual Honorary Awards for 2010 at Puttur.
Three prominent Tulu personalities bagged these awards for their contribution to the development of Tulu language and literature. D. K. Chowta, the senior Tulu writer who penned the widely acclaimed Tulu novel Mithabail Yamunakke; Korapolu of Sullia, who is capable of singing many Tulu ballads; and Shantharam Kalladka, the maker of the famous Kalladka dolls, were among those chosen to receive these awards.
In his address, Mr. Gowda said that Tulu is well on the way to getting included in the 8th schedule of the Indian Constitution. Speaking further, he said that he has put in a lot of efforts to get Tulu included in the 8th schedule of Indian languages in the Constitution, adding that a language needs to be a popular spoken language in order to be introduced into the 8th schedule. He also remarked that one has to be proud to belong to the Tulu community and urged all Tulu speakers to protect and preserve their rich culture.
Puttur MLA Mallika Prasad inaugurated the event and, in his address, he urged all Tulu speakers to work hard for the growth and development of their language and culture.
The chief guest of the event was Lingadevaru Halemane, the Rangayana director. Speaking about the greatness of Tulu, he said that the number of festivals found in Tulu culture cannot be found in any other culture.
