Mangaluru, February 19, 2025: Member of Parliament Capt Brijesh Chowta has urged Public Works Minister Satish Jarkiholi to expedite the preparation of the detailed project report (DPR) for the upgrade of key roads in Dakshina Kannada, including the development of Shiradi Ghat Highway and the construction of an Outer Ring Road (ORR) for Mangaluru, and to take swift action for their implementation.

The DPR for the development of the Shiradi Ghat highway, which falls within the Western Ghats, is still pending. The delay in DPR preparation is causing setbacks in improving this vital highway, which serves as the primary route for trade, tourism, and commute between state capital and coast. Given the frequent disruptions and deteriorating road conditions, immediate action is necessary to ensure seamless connectivity and road safety.

Additionally, the clearance from the Forest Department for road widening has yet to be obtained. Therefore, it is essential to prepare the project report as soon as possible to assess the feasibility of the Shiradi Ghat road development.

Delays in preparing the DPR would further postpone the implementation of this highway development project. He also requested the minister’s full cooperation and intervention in securing approval from the Forest Department. Once completed, this proposal would be submitted to the central government for further processing.

Outer Ring Road for Mangaluru

The MP said Mangaluru, which is emerging as the second-largest city in Karnataka, has been facing increasing traffic congestion in certain areas. Given the city’s coastal location, urban expansion has also posed various challenges.Due to its well-connected transport infrastructure, including road, rail, port, and air links, Mangaluru attracts a large number of people.

However, considering the rising urban density and traffic issues in the city’s core, the construction of an Outer Ring Road has become a necessity. In this context, Capt Chowta recommended that Minister Jarkiholi ensure the prompt preparation of a comprehensive DPR to facilitate the city’s long-term development.

DPR for Mani-Sampaje Highway

The MP said that the NH-275 highway connecting Mani-Sampaje, which serves as a crucial link to prominent pilgrimage sites like Dharmasthala and Kukke Subrahmanya, needs an upgrade.

To transform the 71.60 km, stretch into a four-lane road, the preparation of a DPR must be accelerated. Capt Chowta urged the minister to issue appropriate directives to expedite this process.

Additionally, for the convenience of devotees traveling to Kukke Subrahmanya from Kerala and Bengaluru, the Periyashanti-Paichar road should be developed. This would also facilitate a connection between NH-75 and NH-275 through the construction of a spur road. Capt Chowta requested Minister Satish Jarkiholi to take necessary action in this regard.
