Main line vessel calls in at New Mangalore Port

Mangalore, December 16: MV Kota Nabil, the main line container vessel of Pacific International Lines (PIL) arrived at New Mangalore Port on Dec 15. The ship unloaded 139 boxes of raw cashew, which will be distributed among the cashew processing units in Mangalore and its neighboring areas. The ship left the port on the morning of Dec 16. 

 

Main line vessels call in at the port directly. The advantages of this is lower cost of handling and lesser transit time. Besides, main line vessels take only 8 day to sail between Mangalore and East Africa while a vessel that sails via Colombo takes 21 days. This puts the exporters at an advantage because the vessel stops by Singapore and the countries of the Far East during its return voyage. 

Shri P. Tamilvanan, chairman of New Mangalore Port said that the  growth of container traffic has enhanced because of the larger number of main line vessels calling in at the port. He requested all users and MLOs to take advantage of this situation. He said that 4,579 TEUs or 91,127 tonnes of raw cashew was unloaded during the financial year 2009 - 10 while only 3741 TEUs or 74,447 tonnes of raw cashew was unloaded during the previous financial year. 

The operators of the main line vessels are happy about the performance of their vessel at New Mangalore Port. They are interested in introducing more main line vessels. In the new future, 3 more main line vessels are expected to call in at the New Mangalore Port.
