Mangalore, Jan 21,2013: The social development of the Dalit community can be a reality when the community comes forward both financially and academically, JR Lobo, former Commissioner of Mangalore City Corporation said.
He was speaking at a district-level seminar on the ‘Intention of the Constitution and current affairs’ organized by Karnataka Dalita Vidyarthi Okkoota in association with Kannada and Culture Department at NGO Hall here on January 20, Sunday.
Lobo further also called upon the members of the Dalit community to make the best use of the opportunities that come their way. He said BR Ambedkar, the architect of the Indian constitution, considering the exploitation of Dalits in the nation, had ensured special provisions for SC ST people in the Constitution.
When instances of exploitation of Dalits are reported even during the present times, one can very well imagine the extent to which the community was exploited decades ago, Lobo said.
The seminar was earlier inaugurated by A Sadananda Shetty, Chairman of Shree Devi Education Trust. Former president of Kannada Sahitya Parishat Harikrishna Punaroor and Principal of Ganapathi P U College Ratnakar Bannadi also spoke on the occasion.
Leaders of various Dalit organizations and students took part in the seminar.
