Man destroys St. Alphonsa Church property

Mangalore, Nov 4, 2011 : A man, who was later identified as Shibu of Jalligudde, entered the St. Alphonsa Catholic Church in Kankanady on Nov 3 Thursday at around 8:30 p.m. and destroyed statues and other church property.

Besides destroying church property, the man also tried to change into the priest’s garments before students staying at a hostel close by stopped him.

The Kadri police rushed to the spot and arrested the man. DCP Muthuraya was also present.

Fr. Shibi, the assistant parish priest of St. Alphonsa Church, will soon lodge a complaint. The incident attracted a large crowd to the church.

Mangalore Police Commissioner Seemanth Kumar Singh rushed to the spot and asked people to vacate the area. The police have taken Shibu’s clothes and footwear as evidence and are investigating the case.

According to certain sources, Shibu is suffering from temporary psychological distress of some sort, which led him to vandalize the church. He is not known to be mentally disoriented. Shibu is the conductor of a Route No. 15 bus.

Ronald Colaco, the president of the International Federation of Karnataka Christian Association (IFKCA); Denis D’Silva, its convener; and Naveen D’Souza, its corporator, have condemned the act.
