Mangalore,Jan7, 2013: The Legal and Human Rights Cell of the DK District Congress Committee has urged Governor Hansraj Bharadwaj to direct the state government to immediately appoint a Lokayukta as well as the Chairman of the State Human Rights Commission.The Cell forwarded a memorandum in this regard to the Governor through Deputy Commissioner N Prakash on January 7, Monday.
The memorandum also requested the Governor to exercise his suo moto powers to make the appointment, in case the government failed to heed to the directive.
Pointing out that the post of Lokayukta has been lying vacant in the state since the past one and a half years, the memorandum alleged that the BJP leaders who spoke volumes against corruption on public platforms, have failed to see to it that a Lokayukta was appointed in a state ruled by the party.
It also strongly condemned the failure of the state government to suspend the 750 officials named in the mines report of erstwhile Lokayukta Santosh Hegde.
The memorandum further said the failure of the government to even appoint a Chairman to the Human Rights commission has hit hard the poor and the oppressed sections of the society. It also alleged that there has been a complete breakdown of the administrative machinery in the state and demanded the appointment of a Lokayukta and SHRC Chairman at the earliest. A.C.Vinayraj, President of the DK District Congress Legal and Human Rights Department, Kallige Taranath Shetty and other office bearers were in the delegation.
