Mangaluru, Jan 07, 2020: Mangalore University emerged the overall champion (170 points) for the fourth year in a row at the 80th All India Inter-University Athletics Championship jointly organised by the Rajiv Gandhi University of Health Sciences and Alva’s Education Foundation at Moodbidri near here on Monday.
Men and women athletes of Mangalore University were also adjudged the champions in their respective categories, while the University of Madras with 98.5 points bagged the runners-up champion trophy and Mahatma Gandhi University, Kochi, came third with 80 points. In women’s championship, Mahatma Gandhi University and the University of Madras bagged second and third places, while in the men’s championship, University of Madras and Maharshi Dayanand University, Rohtak, came second and third, respectively.
Y. Jhothi from Acharya Nagarjuna University, Guntur, who created a meet record in the 100-m hurdles (13.037), with 1,146 points, was declared the best female athlete, while Jay Shah Pradeep from Mangalore University, who set the meet record in triple jump (16.53) with 1,115 points, was adjudged the best male athlete. In all, Mangalore University bagged nine each gold and silver medals and five bronze medals.
Meet records
The championship saw nine meet records being registered by athletes with Mangalore University alone claiming four. On Day 1, Narendra Prathap from Mangalore University created a meet record in the 10 km run, men (29:42:19), while on Day 2 K.T. Juned from Mangalore University created a record in the 20 km Race Walk, men (1:26:39.78) and A. Sherin from University of Madras did it in the long jump, women (6.32m); on Day 3 Sonal Sukhwal from Mohanlal Sukhadia University, Udaipur, created a record in the 20 km Race Walk Women (1:38:40.49) and Komal Jagadale from Savitribai Phule Pune University created a meet record in the 3000 m Steeplechase Women (10:23.658); on Day 4 Narendra Prathap from Mangalore University created a record in the 5,000 m run, men (14:17.77) and Y. Jyothi from Acharya Nagarjuna University, Guntur, created a record in the 100 m hurdles, women (13.037), and on Day 5, Hermilan Bains from Punjabi University, Patiala, created a record in the 1,500 m run (4:24.86), and Pradeep Jay Shah from Mangalore University created record in triple jump (16.53).
Valedictory
The valedictory ceremony was held on Monday in the presence of international athlete P.T. Usha.
The foundation felicitated Indian coach, World University Games, Vijendra Singh, as the best coach with a cash prize of Rs. 25,000. Gold medal winners were given cash prizes of Rs. 15,000, silver medal winners Rs. 10,000 and bronze medal winners were given Rs. 5,000.
