Mangalore, Jan 8,2013 : Students of Mangalore University have decided to take up cudgels against the rise in cases of crime against women. On January 7, Monday hundreds of students staged a protest against the increasing atrocities on women and also against the alleged sexual harassment of a few students by their research guides in the university.
The students who took out a protest march from University to Mangala auditorium, submitted a memorandum to the Vice Chancellor Prof. TC Shivashankeramurthi enlisting their demands.
The memorandum urged for stern action against people resorting to crime against women and stringent anti-rape law. They also demanded a probe into the allegations of sexual harassment of a few Dalit students at the University and urged for steps to make the University campus safe for women students.
Hilson D’Souza, President of the Students’ Union urged for adequate security in the University campus and also around the ladies hostel. He also appealed to set up a centre enabling women to lodge complaints of harassment.
He further urged for the setting up of a committee to probe into the allegation of sexual harassment of a few research students.
The Vice chancellor assured to initiate necessary steps to fulfill the demands and ensure safety of women in the campus.
