Mangalore, May 5: The World Bank has conducted a survey of the sanitation system across India and has declared that most of the districts of Karnataka have poor sanitation. According to the World Bank survey, only 3 districts in Karnataka have been placed in the list of top fifty with Mangalore being the topper.
The other two of the top three are Udupi, which takes the 11th place, and Shimoga, which takes the 13th place. The top second position in the list is occupied by Kolhapur, followed by Ernakulam, Kozikode, Malpuram, and Trissur.
The survey also reveals that most of the districts in North Karnataka are non hygienic in spite of the implementation of several sanitation programmes. Even Belguam, in which the government spent crores on sanitation alone over the past 2 years, occupies the 203rd position on the list. However, it emerges as the topper in most of the districts in North Karnataka.
The World Bank took into consideration factors such as construction of toilets, effective utilization of funds, role played by local organizations and the public, and others while conducting its survey.
Although Mangalore has emerged as the topper, 17,746 houses in the district still do not have toilets. But the state of Karnataka, failed the World Bank’s sanitation test although the government had sanctioned Rs. 100 crore each for each of the 8 city corporations for implementation of sanitation programmes. In Belgaum, the civic body had failed to dispose solid waste, and only Mangalore and Udupi appear to be serious about sanitation issues.
