Mangaluru, April 08, 2022: In what could have been a major disaster, a city bus caught fire in a freak accident when it collided with a motor bike at Hampankatta Junction. Fortunately no major casualties have been reported as of now.
The incident occurred at around 2:00 pm outside Vijaya Pen Mart near Signal Light Junction. It is said that a speeding motor bike with some youth rammed into City Bus No. 45 (Ashel Transport) operating on the Suratkal-Mangaluru route. The bike went under the front wheel of the bus and as a result, fuel began to leak out of its petrol tank. The friction caused by the drag and the heat of the bus tyre ignited the leaking fuel and it burst into a huge flame in no time. The bike riders reportedly escaped unhurt, but this could not be immediately confirmed.
Passersby quickly responded to the occasion by evacuating the bus passengers, which included women, children and even babies, according to an eye witness. Fire Brigade arrived immediately and began to extinguish the fire. Traffic was disrupted and injured people were taken to the nearby Wenlock Hospital for first aid and medical checkup. A woman has reportedly sustained injuries in the fire mishap.
More details are awaited.
