Mangaluru, April 19, 2025: Muslim religious leaders said here on Friday that fight against recent amendments to Waqf Act will continue till the Union government withdraws them.
Speaking at a protest organised by Ulama Coordination Karnataka at the Shah Grounds, Adyar in Mangaluru, Dakshina Kannada Qazi and director of Ulama Coordination Karnataka Ahamed Musliyar said the Union government will not be allowed to enforce the recent amendments, in this life time.
Secretary of Ulama Coordination Karnataka, K.M. Usman Faizi, said Muslims cannot accept the recent amendments, which places obstacles in the use of Waqf properties for welfare of Muslims. Nobody has right to modify anything related to Waqf. “We are confident of getting justice from Supreme Court,” he said.
Former president of Karnataka State Waqf Board, Mohammed Shafi, said Union government will pay a heavy price for bringing amendments to the Waqf Act. The present protest is not against any party or a community but against the fascist mindset people who have brought in amendments. Just like the way Muslims succeeded in making government overturn judgement of apex court in Shah Banu case, they will succeed in prevailing upon Central government to withdraw amendments, he said.
Sheikh Abdul Khader Musliyar Bombrana, MSM Abdul Rasheed Zaini, U.K. Abdul Aziz Darimi Chokkabettu, and Dakshina Kannada District Waqf Advisory Committee president Abdul Nasir Lucky Star, also spoke.
People from different parts of the State participated in the protest. “Ham lad ke lenge Azadi, Hai Jan Se Pyari Azadi,” slogans were raised from the stage and were repeated by people.
Traffic moved on a snail’s pace between Padil and B.C. Road on the Mangaluru-Bengaluru National Highway 75 since Friday afternoon due to gathering for the protest. It came to virtual halt for sometime between Adyar and Thumbe because of large presence of people on the national highway at Adyar.
