Mangaluru, May 11, 2015: The DK Philatelic club held it’s regular monthly meeting at the Pandeshwar Head Post Office - 575 001 - on Sunday May 10 2015. It has been an active tradition to hold this meeting on the second Sunday of the month.
It is good to observe that a dedicated band of local Phileatilists and Numesmatists enthusiastically congregate in a good number , interact and exchange ideas and news each month. Also a few professional sellers and exchangers from different parts of India visit to promote the exchange of stamps and coins, considering that this royal hobby is going commercial rapidly. Every month a theme is chosen and individuals having collections on this ‘theme’ display their collection which is indeed a very attractive and enlightening experience.
At this May 2015 meeting the theme was, “Vintage cars” and the valuable collection of a young man was on display. Master Joash David Prabhu, a student of St Aloysius HS Mangalore’s prize winning collection caused a sensation.
He became a stamp collector at a very young age and took his hobby to new heights. He participated in several competitions and won many prizes. Some of the competitions and prizes in parenthesis are: ‘Stamp Mania 2009’ at Baroda (Sapphire), Stamps od India National Exhibition New Delhi. (Bronze), DK District Philatelic Exhibition ‘Mangalapex 2014’ (First) , ‘Karnapex 2015’ Benguluru (Silver) at this meet he won a special prize as ‘Best Junior Philatelist’ from the Karnataka Philatelic Society. He has many interests too Karate, Shot Put, Discuss, he has won a few prizes too. He has just finished his school and plans to be an automobile engineer.
Present were President Prabhakar Kamath, Jt Secretary Mansoor Hussain and other executive members. A prominent and popular executive member was the well known Dr. G G Laxman Prabhu who in his characteristic style addressed the gathering with a lot of useful information and guidance on philately and Numismatics "One painless way of learning history and admiring it is through philately and Numismatics". The Secretary of the association told ’Mangalore Today’ how it all began : In 1975, the dream of Philatelists of Mangalore, came true with Shri. NV Shenoi, Director General of Post and Telegraph Department, Govt. of India inaugurating the Mangalore Philatelic Club.
The objective of the Club was to promote philatelic interest and to provide education to young and the old through postage stamps. In 1976 the Club hosted the 1st ever District Level Exhibition in India - ’Mangalapex’ under the patronage of the then SSP Smt. KNK Karthiayani. In 1992, with a strength of 66 members, the Club was renamed Dakshina Kannada Philatelic Association - DKPA, with an aim of reaching every nook and corner of the District. DKPA was again renamed as Dakshina Kannada Philatelic and Numismatic Association (DKPNA) on April 14, 2002. Today we are on the Web with an aim to show India through her stamps and coins.
The membership of DKPNA is open to all. The latest developments in the Philatelic World are discussed at the monthly meetings on Second Sundays. New members are introduced. Forthcoming activities of DKPNA are chalked out during these meetings. DKPNA has a very good library with lots of interesting books for the beginner to Philately.Exhibitions are also held at the venue.
