Mangaluru, October 4, 2024: In a significant development aimed at boosting urban connectivity, Mangaluru is preparing to launch its own water metro project, modeled after Kerala’s successful Kochi Water Metro system. The Karnataka Maritime Board (KMB) will spearhead the Mangaluru Water Metro Project (MWMP) by drafting a detailed project report (DPR), according to a report.
The proposed MWMP will establish a water-based transport network along the National Waterways on the Nethravathi (NW-74) and Gurupura (NW-43) Rivers, linking Bajal to Maravoor. The first phase of the project will cover a 30-kilometre route, incorporating 17 stations from Bajal to the Maravoor Bridge. "MWMP will be the second-largest water transport system after Kochi, enhancing connectivity and driving regional development," an official from KMB said.
The fleet is expected to consist of electric or diesel-powered catamaran boats designed for efficient operations. The KMB has issued a tender for the DPR, which will encompass comprehensive infrastructure assessments, environmental impact studies, financial analyses, and project structuring. Consultants will analyze demand, land availability, and multimodal connectivity options while prioritizing sustainability.
The DPR will include technical surveys, such as LiDAR and bathymetric studies, to inform station placement and dredging requirements. The project will also assess potential cargo movement using Roll-on/Roll-off (Ro-Ro) Water Metro services, traffic patterns, and future service demands for the next 25 years.
An environmental assessment will extend to a 5-km buffer zone, evaluating air and water quality in compliance with guidelines from the Ministry of Environment, Forest, and Climate Change. The financial study will propose cost estimates, revenue projections, and tariff structures, alongside the socio-economic impact analysis. The DPR will also explore vessel configurations, including air-conditioned and non-air-conditioned options, and propose the formation of a Special Purpose Vehicle (SPV) to facilitate project funding.
Karnataka Chief Minister Siddaramaiah, during the 2024-2025 budget presentation, confirmed the preparation of a feasibility report for Water Metro services on the Gurupura and Nethravathi Rivers.
The Kochi Water Metro, which began operations in 2023, spans 76 km and includes 78 boats and 38 terminals. Its success has set a benchmark for similar projects across India, inspiring Mangaluru’s ambitious plan to enhance its transportation network.
