Mentioning that preventing the violation of traffic laws is one of the major duties of any city corporation, he urged the district administration not to hesitate to take strict action against those who violate traffic laws. The minister also urged the MCC to prevent construction of unauthorized building and to monitor the construction of new buildings so that they do not violate the rules and regulations of Mangalore Urban Development Authority (MUDA).

Agreeing with the minister, Commissioner of MCC Vijayaprakash said that the corporation is expecting additional grants to implement its project of constructing a parking lot at the site of the old service bus stand at Hampankatta.

Deputy Commissioner of DK V. Ponnuraj, who had recently returned from the United States of America, where he underwent a two-and-half-week training, said that the district administration is promoting off-street parking throughout Mangalore, especially downtown.

Home Minister V. S. Acharya appreciated the developmental plans of the district administration and said that roads are meant for vehicular movement, not for parking.

Regarding solid waste management, Vijayaprakash said that the MCC has devised a project of temporary soil capping to prevent the break out of fires in its dumping yards. Disclosing that the civic body has already spent Rs 49 lakh on this project, he said that at least Rs. 2.5 crore is required for permanent solutions.

Mr. Suresh congratulated Mangalore for ranking 8th in a list of 25 cities selected from 400 cities all over the country for implementing excellent waste disposal system. He said that five cities in Karnataka are in the list and that Mysore has bagged the second rank.

In response to Suresh’s query regarding the people’s reaction to MCC’s developmental projects, DC V. Ponnuraj said that citizens have expressed their discontentment over the lack of proper storm water drains and footpaths, adding that the people will definitely laud the efforts of the MCC if these problems are solved.

The minister also criticized two MCC engineers who quarreled in public recently. Mayor Rajani Dugganna, District-in-charge Minister Krishna J. Palemar, and MLA N. Yogish Bhat participated in this review meeting.
