Mangalore, December 3: The annual feast of Blessed Joseph Vaz parish of Mudipu and the 300th death anniversary of Blessed Joseph Vaz were celebrated on Nov 30 – Dec 2. Fr. Franklyn D’Souza, the youth director, offered special prayers for the ailing and the elderly on the morning of Tuesday at mass.

Holy masses were held throughout Tuesday for the benefit of innumerable pilgrims throughout Tuesday. Dr. Aloysius Paul D’Souza, the bishop of Mangalore Diocese, celebrated the Holy Mass and delivered a meaningful homily on Dec 1, Wednesday. He also released the novena book of St. Alphonsa written by Fr. Andrew D’Souza, the parish priest and director of Blessed Joseph Vaz parish, Mudipu.


Dr. Peter Machado, the bishop of Belgaum, celebrated the festal Holy Mass on Thursday. Fr. George Santhumayor, the superior of Infant Jesus Shrine; Fr. Reginald Pinto, the priest of Elyarpadav Parish; Fr. Basil Vaz, the administrator of Fr. Muller Medical College; Fr. Wilfred Prakash D’Souza; Fr. Rudolph D’Sa of Fr. Muller; Fr. Pradeep Correa of Belgaum; Alex D’Souza of Kallianpur; Fr. Gilbert D’Souza of the small Christian community; Fr. Ajit Menezes, the assistant parish priest of Permannur; Fr. Stany Monteiro, the chaplain of Olavinhalli; Fr. Ivan D’Souza, the assistant parish priest of Bantwal; Fr. Vincent Coelho, the parish priest of Bambil; Fr. Valerian Frank, the parish priest of Amembal; and clergymen from various parishes concelebrated the Holy Mass with Rev. Dr. Machado.


Arrangements were made for confessions; and stalls of religious items such as oil and candles were put up at the church. Fr. Vinod Lobo, the assistant parish priest of Mudipu, prepared the liturgical service.


Fr. Andrew D’Souza, the parish priest of Mudipu welcomed the gathering and delivered the vote of thanks. He also announced that the novena in honor of Blessed Joseph Vaz will be held on Fridays from Feb 2011.


The pilgrims were served free food at the shrine on Thursday afternoon.


An exhibition about the missionary work of Blessed Joseph Vaz in Goa, South Canara, and Shri Lanka is being organized at the shrine at present.
