Udupi, Oct 19, 2015: Multi-lingual studies are of utmost importance if one has to gain an in-depth knowledge of history, opined Prof. Upinder Singh, a noted historian and Head of the Department of History of Delhi University.
Prof. Singh who also happens to be the daughter of former prime minister Manmohan Singh was delivering the Padoor Gururaj Bhat Memorial Lecture organised by the Padoor Gururaj Bhat Memorial Trust and Rashtrakavi Govinda Pai Research Centre at the Nutana Ravindra Mantapa of MGM College here on October 18, Sunday.
Continuing Prof. Singh said records and researches are the basis of history. She further added that there was no evidence to prove that the Ramayana and Mahabharatha stories have actually taken place. She further added that the epics are part of the belief systems.
Commenting on Indian history, she said a study of Indian history would mean studying the histories of different provinces and this was possible only when one has knowledge about different languages.
Prof. K Bhyrappa, Vice Chancellor of Mangalore University presided over the function. Dr H Shantharam, Administrative Officer of Manipal Academy of General Education, Prof. H Krishna Bhat, Director of Govinda Pai Research Centre and others were present.
