Murder of lone elderly woman; couple get lifer

Udupi, July 08, 2022: The Second Additional District and Sessions Court has sentenced a couple fo life imprisonment in the case of brutal murder of an 80 year old woman at Subrahmanya Nagar in Puttur four years ago.

 

The convicts are Ambanna alias Ambaraish and his wife Rashida alias Jyothi of Navalagunda in Dharwad. The court has also slapped a penalty of Rs 50,000 on the duo.

The  victim is  Ratnavathi Shedti.  Ratnavathi was leading a solitary life at Subrahmanya and had rented out three rooms to make a living. Her two sons and two daughters used to visit her often to  enquire about her wellbeing.

On July 5, 2019, her daughter Suprabha had repeatedly called Ratnavathi but when there was no response she rushed home only to see the decomposed body of her mother in the bedroom.

The police had on July 10 arrested the couple and questioned them. The duo admitted that they had barged into Ratnavathi’s house on July 2 and had demanded her to give her ornaments. When she refused they killed her and escaped with the gold and cash of Rs 5000 in the house.

The then Udupi Inspector had investigated the case and filed a chargesheet. A total of 21 witnesses were heard in this case.
