NGT-Joint committee inspects alleged violations in Netravathi riverfront work

Mangaluru Smart City Ltd. general manager K.S. Arunprabha explained the scope of Netravathi riverfront work to NGT-constituted joint committee members in the presence of Deputy Commissioner M.P. Mullai Muhilan in Mangaluru on Tuesday.

National Green Tribunal (NGT), Southern zone, Chennai has restrained Mangaluru Smart City Limited (MSCL) from carrying out work on the riverfront side in CRZ area under Netravathi waterfront promenade project in Mangaluru till the next date of hearing.

NGT issued interim orders based on a complaint filed by National Environment Care Federation (NECF).“Though the works only on riverfront side had been restrained, it has been made very clear to MSCL that if any work is carried out in violation of conditions imposed, the structures will be removed, besides being subject to the imposition of heavy costs,” the order declared.

NGT in the past had ordered for the formation of joint committee in order to submit a detailed report on the project. The Tribunal had asked members of the Joint Committee to submit a report before June 24. Any failure to inspect and submit the would attract imposition of costs to be paid personally by the joint committee members, it noted.
