Mangalore, Mar 21: Twakha Ahmed Musliar took up his responsibilities as the new Qazi of Dakshina Kannada on Saturday at Zeenath Baksh Central Jumma Masjid at Bunder in Mangalore. Syed Hyder Ali Shihab Tangal Panakkad, the president of Pattikkad Jamia Nooriya, placed a turban over the head of the new Qazi.
The post of Qazi was unoccupied for nearly one month after the previous Qazi C M Abdulla Musliar Chembarikka died under mysterious circumstances.
The new Qazi assured that he would continue with community’s and the region’s secular credentials. He said that the Zeenath Baksh Central Jumman Masjid has always maintained a secular stand and will continue to do so.
Syed Hyder Ali Shihab Tangal Panakkad appealed to the members of the community to uphold the principles of unity and brotherhood. He wished the new Qazi well and expressed hope that he would be an able leader to the region’s Muslim community.
Bambrana Mudarris Abdul Khader Musliar spoke on the significance of the post of Qazi. Just before the formal speeches, the foundation stone for an Arabic School was laid.
T K M Bawa Musliar, the Qazi of Kasargod district, spoke about the significance of the post of Qazi. Yenepoya Abdullah Kunhi, the chairman of the Central Masjid Committee; MLA U T Khader; Muslim leaders K P Abdul Jabbar Musliar, P M Ibrahim Musliar Bekala, N P M Zainul Abidin Tangal, V K Aboobakkar Musliar, Abdul Khader Saheb, Ibrahim Darimi, K S Mohammed Masood, B Ahmed Moideen, Y Mohammed Kunhi, C A Mohammed Shafi; and K Ashraf, the former mayor, also participated in the programme.
