Padma Shri award recipient ’Sukrajji’ no more

Karwar, February 13, 2025: Padma Shri award recipient Sukri Bomma Gowda (88), known for her folk songs, and anti-liquor sale campaign, passed away at her residence in Badageri village’s Ankola taluk in the early hours of Thursday.

Ailing for several months, she was treated at a private hospital in Mangaluru three days back. She had returned home and had recovered. She had been talking to family members till night and breathed her last in the early morning, family sources said.


Sukrajji


Popularly known as ’Sukrajji’, she is noted for singing authentic Halakki folk songs. Several decades back, she had led the fight against increased liquor sale at Badageri village.

She was honoured with ’Janapadashri’ award in 1999, ’Nadoja’ in 2006 and ’Padmashri’ in 2017.
