Mangalore, August 7: The district police organized a property return parade in the premises of the superintendent’s office on Aug 7, Saturday. The property recovered from Bantwal, Sullia, and Puttur was also returned on the same occasion.

SP Dr. A. S. Subramanyeshwar Rao told reporters during a press meet held by the police department after the parade that the police have retrieved property worth Rs. 3,289,267 from April – June and have returned property worth Rs. 2,414,042 to the owners. About 75 percent of the property has already been returned to the owners and the rest of the property will be returned to the respective owners on receipt of the court order, he said.


Revealing the district’s crime statistics, the SP said that property worth Rs. 16,737,000 has been stolen from the people in 2010 and property worth Rs. 37 lakh has been recovered. The case files cannot be closed till 50 percent of the property is recovered, said the SP adding that so far only 26 percent of the property has been recovered.


The year 2010 witnessed 6 robbery cases and one dacoit case. Cases of burglary have been reduced this year with only 37 cases being reported. Other crimes have increased by 68 compared to the previous year, said the SP.


He also said that the police department has launched civilian rifle training for the people of Puttur, in which 48 civilians participated. A group of 30 civilians participated in the training held in Bantwal to foster better understanding between civilians and the police department.


Police constables will receive refresher training in Mangalore, and every police officer will have to compulsorily attend this training, said the SP.


Police IT software is also being implemented; and so far, 4 out of 100 modules have been completed. Officials will also receive in-house training, and two constables from each station should attend this training, during which they will be trained on crime investigation, forensic science, forensic medicine, and law. Besides, each constable will receive a round of refresher training, he said.
