Mangalore, April 15: The pre-paid auto rickshaw facility will be introduced at Central Railway Station with effect from May 1, 2011.
Auto rickshaw drivers have been fleecing hapless passengers for years. Passengers were forced to suffer in silence because lodging complaints at local police stations was an absolute waste of time.
Finally, the Kanara Chamber of Commerce and Industry (KCCI) has agreed to fund a pre-paid rickshaw booth in the premises of the Mangalore Central Railway Station and railway officials have agreed to provide space for it.
Although this is the only solution to passenger woes, one wonders how many rickshaw drivers will agree to be part of it. It may be recalled that a similar pre-paid rickshaw facility set up at KSRTC bus stand a few years ago hardly had any takers and had to be abandoned.
