Mangaluru, June 23, 2022: 72 year old female patient came with huge neck swelling and breathing difficulty. On testing, it was found to be thyroid cancer with the swelling extending into the chest. On evaluation, the patient was found to have critical coronary artery disease (left main) which required bypass surgery. It was a challenge for doctors to perform these two surgeries.
The Cardiology, Cardiac Surgery, Endocrine Surgery, and Cardiac Anaesthesia department doctors discussed and decided to perform both surgeries simultaneously. The surgery was of 7-hour duration and went on uneventfully. The bypass surgery took around 4 hours and thyroid cancer surgery went on for 3 hours. On post-op day one patient was removed from ventilator support and started conversing. She was discharged in stable condition after one week.
This kind of combined bypass surgery and thyroid cancer surgery is not reported in India previously. For the first time in Justice K S Hegde Charitable Hospital in the presence of Cardiac anaesthetist Dr. Manjunath Kamath, Bypass surgery was performed by Cardiac Surgeons Dr. A G Jayakrishnan, Dr. M Gopalakrishnan, Dr. Nareshchand Hegde H, Dr. Subramanyam K. and Dr. Anup H S, thyroid cancer surgery was performed by Endocrine Surgeon Dr. Smita Rao and cancer surgeon Dr. Vinay J. Rajendra.
It is a matter of pride for K.S.Hegde Hospital for performing such a rare combined surgery.
