Mangaluru, Aug 16, 2018: With the rain incessant after a brief beark on Augusst 15, morning, in the district, the water-level in Nethravathi and Kumaradhara is yet over flowing, but a landslide on NH 75 at Valalu in Bajathooru village affected vehicular movement for one and a half hours.
Incessant rain with gusty wind the last two days has damaged crops in Thekkaru in Uppinangady. Over 300 arecanut trees of Subrahmanya Rao in Thekkaru has been uprooted. Tree fall damaged a house at Dambethadka. Houses were also damaged in Bajaru Janatha Colony.
Kumaradhara and its tributary is in spate. The Subrahmanya-Manjeshwara road remained inundated on August 15, Wednesday. A few houses still remained marooned in the region.
The confluence of Nethravathi and Kumaradhara at the Sahasralingeshwara Temple in Uppinangady, for the first time since 2013 attracted a large number of devotees. Officials surveyed the rain-affected areas.
In Udupi : Udupi district received an average of 111.3 mm in the last 24 hours.
The body of Shankar Poojary alias Manju Poojary who was washed away in rainwater was retrieved on August 15, Wednesday. In Karkala taluk, houses in Nadpalu and in Beluru were damaged. In Udupi, houses in Perduru, Kidiyur, Badagabettu and in Katpadi were damaged. In Kundapur houses were partially damaged at Hardalli–Mandalli, Hangluru, Japthi, Senapur and Beejadi.
DK Minister claims Rs 100 crore rain relief.
DK District In-charge Minister U T Khader said a proposal for a special package of Rs 100 crore to the district for rain relief measures has been submitted to the government.
He said 11 persons have lost lives and the flood has only intensified in the district. “Nodal officers have been deployed to handle the situation and home guards to alert the people. Up to 110 families in Uppinangady, 25 in Bantwal and 10 in Ullal have been shifted,” said Khader.
The minister stated that 31 low-lying areas have been identified in the district: Mangaluru taluk — Adyapadi, Malavooru, Anegundi and Alike. Bantwal taluk — Panemangaluru, Haladka, Jakribettu Bastipadpu, Sarapady and Navooru. Belthangady taluk — Shishila, Charmadi and Venooru. Puttur taluk — Uppinangadi, Hosamat, Shiradi, Balthila and Udane. Sullia taluk — Subrahmanya. Kadaba taluk — Hosmutt, Nooji, Kunturu, Perabe, Alangaru and Bilinele. Moodbidri taluk — Valpadi and Moodukonaje and Mulki.
“The Shiradi Ghat Road has been blocked due to landslides, but restoration work is in progress. The Sampaje Ghat Road is blocked. The vehicles are using Charmadi route. The public should cooperate,” he said.
